The Basics of Starting a Jewelry Business – Quality, Creativity, Value for money

Have you ever experienced a hard time of finding the right accessory that looks luxury but not expensive?  Palavi Harjani had that experience too so she decided to create her own line and is well on her way to inspire other women the creative ways of wearing the same piece of jewelry too.

Here is her story!

Hi Palavi, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your business

I am from Los Angeles, California and have moved to Hong Kong about 15 years ago. I started up my company – Palavi Speciality Jewelry because one fine day, I was in desperate need to buy a chain or necklace that would update my look with something classy and elegant and not look cheap and plastic. Everything was either expensive or too cheap, I went to many local stores and ended up in Chanel! As beautiful as the fashion jewelry looked, it was total fashion! Not one real pearl for $17,000 HKD and the chain was not even gold plated. Then my hunt started to create my own Chanel inspired freshwater pearls on a gold plated chain.

What motivated you to enter into this business?

My most satisfying moments are when I’m designing and creating jewelry, that incorporate semi precious pieces from around the globe. Using antique stones and pendants and designing them into chains and necklaces that women could wear from the day into the night, started my first collection.
Every piece in my collection will make a statement but is also easy to throw on and go. Dress up any outfit in minutes.

How do you differentiate yourself from the similar products in town?

My collections only entail freshwater pearls and use the best quality hardware. When I make a collection, I try to keep only 6 pieces of each design so the customer can have a unique piece of jewelry.

What have you found to be your most effective way of finding your clients?

The most effective way to find my new clients is by partaking in exhibitions and being up to date on social media.

What is your business challenge and how do you try to get over the struggles?

Wow since this area of business is completely saturated. I found that there are many pop ups that try to create designs that would mimic mine but with cheaper material. It was hard to sustain but after a while the customers would come back and order agian.

How do you keep yourself motivated during the difficult times?

Since designing and creating is my passion, motivation is never an issue!

What is a day of your life like?

My day starts and end in Jewelry! Starting at 7 am by checking messages and emails and later in the afternoon creating new designs. By 2 pm I work on making and sending adverts. I try to finish my work by 3:30 pm as I also am a mom of two beautiful girls. By 9pm I give it a go again…

As an entrepreneur, how do you see the “work-life” balance?

Balance is part of life.  We are fortunate to have assistance at home so being an entrepreneur in Hong Kong is a somewhat an easy balance.

So how do you usually spend your leisure time?

Besides making and designing jewelry, my interests lie in travel and art. I love to see the history of the areas visited and their way of life and especially the jewelry.

If anyone want to get in touch with you, where should we send them to?
